Book Blitz ~ Defiler by Cari Silverwood

Defiler by Cari Silverwood
(Preyfinders #3)
Publication date: July 28th 2015
Genres: Adult, Romance, Science Fiction

Synopsis:

Our Earth is on the edge of destruction, our cities are pocked with missile craters, and beneath the surface the alien factory queen lurks.

Four women of power may be our saviors. The last is Talia. Gifted by earth magic with a mastery of edged weapons, she’s a katana-wielding, geek chick with a loathing of alpha men. Although mating enhances magic, she knows bonding with aliens must surely be wrong. Besides, her destined bond mate, Brask, is an Igrakk warrior of the caveman persuasion. One dominant male is bad enough. Dassenze, the alien man-god in the flesh, also desires her.

As they near their target, Talia’s man problems become the lesser of many evils, for the factory queen awaits them with her nerve chewers and her drills. The price for being avenging, kickass heroines could be a messy death.

Warning: Dominance and submission themes, dubious consent, hot aliens, and violence. Mild horror too if you’re squeamish.

Excerpt:

The rhythm of the fight sang to her muscles and her mind. Brask went down to her blade, once, twice. They commenced again. The clunk and clang echoed in the room. Outside was pure darkness due to the window reflecting back the faint light Dassenze possessed. She parried and leapt backward, ready to return.
“Stop!” Dassenze cried. “Let’s try this instead. Catch.”
Brask caught the flung object and sent his sword skidding along the table toward Dassenze. The object was small and pistol shaped. He held it up for her to see. “This simulates a handgun, Talia.”
“Yes. I can tell if it hits you. It emits intermittent bursts of green light. I want to see if you can avoid being shot before reaching Brask. It’s dark. You’re tired. I can see you’re slowing down.”
“Okay.” He didn’t miss much. She was tiring but so was Brask. She let her gaze calibrate the hard curves of his arms and the sheen of sweat on his chest and abdomen. These Igrakk aliens didn’t differ much at all from humans.
“Like what you see?” With his thumb, Brask flicked something on the pistol. A green dot blinked on the floor in front of him.
“I was simply comparing your anatomy to that of humans.”
“And? What did you decide?”
The angle of his eyebrow and timbre of his voice fascinated her. Anatomy sounded clinical and her reaction was definitely not that. Something about having to look up at him, even from across the room, triggered an oh yum response. Next she’d be asking for his autograph.
She untangled her thoughts and searched for a witty reply. It didn’t arrive in time and for once honesty came first.
“That you look very similar to a man.” She cleared her throat. “In your musculature. I’ve studied anatomy before getting my forensic pathology degree.”
“Does that surprise you?”
Dassenze chipped in. “Throughout the universe, all intelligent life, excluding our enemies the Bak-lal, are mammals and compatible enough to mate and produce viable offspring.”
His words died away. The room was quiet. She was alone with them and they all knew what the other was thinking. Reproduction. Sex. Only her thoughts had gone precisely, unerringly, to the dirtiest possible arrangement with the two of them fucking her at once.
Abort that thought. Shit, damn, and crap. Stop thinking dirty.
The heat of a blush arrived. Then she wondered if those specifications included the Ascend who were supposed to be gods. She wasn’t going to ask.
“In case you’re wondering, we Ascend don’t quite fit into that system.”
Could he mind read?
“We can mate but not have offspring. There have been no new Ascend for several hundred years.
That was sad. Her eyes fixed on Dassenze. “How old are you?” Could a god have an age?
“I’m very old.” His smile was barely there. “Now we’ve settled that. Begin. Get from where you are to Dassenze without being hit. Begin when this pen hits the floor.” He held his closed fist at his knee’s height.
The pen fell, tumbling.
Her flight was a rapid parabola curving to wall and back in, with a somersault and a spin to confuse his aim. The force when she hit him surprised even her and he thunked backward with her on top of him and the sword point diving toward his neck with her full weight behind it.
At the last microsecond, Brask batted it away. The sword flew sideways and stuck into the upholstery of a chair, yards away to the side.
A second later, it was back in her hand. Gaping, still straddling Brask’s stomach, she stared at the blade. How?
Then he hauled her down and kissed her.
The impact went through her like a flight of slow motion doves. Bliss. Everything shut down except an awareness of him beneath her and his lips on hers. His hand was at the back of her head and he threaded his fingers through her hair, gathering more in his fist to pull her even closer. To keep her still.
But she wasn’t going anywhere.
The kiss lasted forever, or it seemed so. While they kissed she lived only that moment, the press on her skin, the heat, the parting to allow his tongue inside her. When his lips left hers she was struck by the loss. She kept her eyes shut, reliving what had happened even though his breathing was still so close, inches away, warming her face.
And as he breathed, she rose and fell. Her thighs were spread. She was vulnerable, despite her position above.
She opened her eyes.
He looked up at her, smiling, with his fingers still tight in her hair, pulling on her scalp.
Any minute, he would fling her down and roll her over, pull down her tights and fuck her.
Her resistance had vanished. He could rip a hole in her tights and do her sitting here. She drew her lower lip between her teeth, on the edge of leaning down and whispering it to his ear.

Her brow twitches. “I can’t do this. I’m sorry.” She steps away, heading for the door.

Lunging from the chair, I catch her shoulder and spin her to face me. “Can’t do what? Why are you running?”

“Because being around you makes me feel things, and I know it’s wrong to.”

“Ramona, you need to tell me,” I plead, heart beating erratically. “What kind of ‘things’ are you feeling?” I need to know if they’re the same.

“Like you could be something incredible for me. But . . . ”

God, she’s killing me. “But?”

“It’s not the right time.” She smiles softly.

A beat passes with us staring at one another. I don’t want the moment to end. I don’t want her to walk away. “Do you love him?” My tongue is thick in my mouth.
She shakes her head, smiling, yet her eyes are sad . . . so damn sad. “Not like you think—that’s the problem.”

Excerpt:

“I can see the wheels turning in that beautiful head of yours. Let us take you to breakfast or lunch, or maybe dinner? Your choice. Of course, we could always take you to all three. Yep, I think that one works best for us,” Tyler said to her with a wink at the end. “Dammit Ty, you're gonna overwhelm the poor girl. Back off,” Nathaniel told him with a frown, marring his beautiful brown eyes. “Thank you for the kind offer but I can’t,” she declined and turned to put their order in for their meals. “Why not?” asked Nathaniel as she was half way across the room. She stopped dead in her tracks, feeling the blush working its way up her face, which, of course, made her cheeks throb. Damn pale skin was all she could think as she turned around, and knew that not only could they see her embarrassment, but so could everyone else as they all waited for her to answer him. She stood there for a full minute staring at them, until she heard him... “Because this ain’t no fucking dating service, that’s why,” Fred said as he walked up behind her and put his meaty arm around her shoulders, and cupped her tightly. She could see the anger in Tyler and Nathaniel’s faces as they stared at where Fred’s hand was. They both stood up and Tyler shot a small smile her way, and that wink she was coming to love, before refocusing his attention on Fred. Nathaniel just looked pissed off and she knew she was about to get hurt again. That was all men did. Good God, was he freaking huge; bigger than she originally thought.  “Come here, Butterfly,” Nathaniel told her. She started to move, thinking whatever he was about to do would be better than having Fred’s stinky self glued to her the way he was. As she took her first step, Fred held onto her arm so tightly that she whimpered. Tyler and Nathaniel growled at that. Actually growled. Glaring daggers at Fred, Nathaniel walked closer, grabbed her hand so gently she thought she was dreaming, and gave one small tug so she practically flew into his chest. The strange thing for her was that the entire time, he made sure she was protected. When she hit his chest, he put one hand to the small of her back and one to the back of her neck. It was very proprietary. His large arms engulfed her, completely surrounding her. Strangely, she felt safe, and she found she really liked the way he was caressing the back of her neck with his thumb. Turning her head with a small smile on her face, she saw Tyler looking at her with this big wolf-like grin on his, it gave her a moment of peace. She closed her eyes, just wanting to enjoy this feeling of safety that she had never felt before. She wanted to embrace it before it was gone. “Don’t ever put your dirty fucking hands on our woman again. Are we clear? Don’t even look at her for that matter. If I ever find out that you have done anything to make Keeley uncomfortable or feel less than safe, I will come in here and personally kick your ass before having this place shut down. And then just for kicks, I’ll make you lick the dirt off my shoes. We clear?” Nathaniel said all of this to Fred with such menace in his voice that Keeley couldn’t help but start to shake in fear, and grip his shirt tighter. She had a hold of it just above his abs, and feeling him tighten his grip on her calmed her nerves just a little bit. For the first time ever, she actually heard a note of fear creep into Fred’s voice when he said, “Ya man, ok. I didn’t know she was yours, she never said anything.” That’s when Tyler got involved and admonished him. “You think that gives you the right to touch her or speak for her anytime you like?” She tried to burrow right into Nathaniel at that, because even though his voice held a note of steel in it, Tyler’s had such a fierce growl that she wanted to weep from the fear this confrontation was causing in her. “Look guys, I’m sorry, ok. Keeley, I need you here now, but tomorrow night you can have off with pay, ok? Sound fair?” She simply nodded her head, because she just knew her voice would shake if she dared try to speak. Just then she heard the ding from the kitchen bell, signaling her other table’s orders were ready. Reluctantly she left the safety of Nathaniel’s arms, not looking at anyone for fear that they would see just how this encounter left her. Aroused from being so close to Nathaniel, and fearful that this would only make things worse with Fred and Eleanor.

EXCERPT

Elias and I grabbed our drinks and joined our friends. Rick pulled me to his side right away, so I had to squeeze into a tiny corner beside him. But I didn’t mind. I enjoyed my friends’ company and even Rick’s flirting attempts didn’t stop me from having fun. Even more, his terrible pick-up lines soon had me doubled over with laughter, and took my mind off Parker, if only for a few minutes. I tried to prove to Rick that he could win over a girl even with less corny lines, but Rick wouldn’t be Rick if he didn’t disagree.
“Wanna bet?” he challenged me. I looked at him with interest and instantly agreed.
“Hell, yeah!”
“Pick a girl, any girl,” he said cockily. “I guarantee you, I’ll get her number.” I looked around the club, my eyes settled on a gorgeous woman, leaning on the table next to ours. She was playing idly with the cocktail pick in her drink. She appeared slightly older than us, no more than 10 years, and I was certain she’d be an even bigger challenge since she’d probably heard all the corny pick-up lines before.
“Her.” I pointed my finger. Rick’s gaze traveled up her long, shapely legs, small waist and generously sized chest. He smirked at me, saying, “She’s smoking hot. You’ve got yourself a bet.” We shook hands, and as he took two steps toward her, I remembered we hadn’t talked about the terms of our bet.
“Hey, wait,” I yelled at his retreating back.
He jerked around. “What? Did you change your mind? You’d rather have me all to yourself?” His eyebrow shot up.
Rolling my eyes, I chuckled, and our friends laughed right along with me. “We haven’t said anything about the rewards. What do I get when I win?” I challenged him with a wide grin.
“Dream on, kitten. Before you can blink three times, I’ll have her eating out of my hand.”
I laughed so hard tears filled my eyes. “We’ll see about that.”
Rick confidently strutted over to the woman at the next table, and we all turned heads after them, and perked up our ears so we could hear the conversation.
“Hey, sugar,” Rick winked at the woman, who gave him a look from under her eyebrows.
“Uh-huh,” she muttered, uninterested.
“Do you know how to work with a sandpaper?” he shot out, and our table exploded in laughter.
“If she doesn’t slap him right now, then the world might just as well end,” I said.
The woman frowned at him. She asked him what he meant by that, and Rick replied.
“Because I could use someone to rub my wood.”
“Oh, god, he did not just say that,” Jon clamped a hand over his mouth. “I can’t believe he just said that.” He shook his head incredulously. But to our surprise, the woman started laughing. Out loud. When she finally calmed down, she put her hand on his shoulder.
“I’ve had a shitty day, and you just made it better. Thank you for that. Come, let me buy you a drink.” Rick turned to us with a wide grin on his face, and flipped us the bird before disappearing in the crowd with the woman on his arm.
“What the hell just happened?”
“That was pure luck,” Carmen, one of our classmates, said. I was completely shocked. I couldn’t believe she fell for such an awful, cliché pick up line.
Five minutes later, Rick returned to the table, a scrap of paper between his index and middle finger. He threw it on the table, a smug expression on his face, and turned to me.
“You were saying earlier?”

excerpt

©2015 Debra Presley

Abby sagged against the elevator wall, completely exhausted from her long day. All she wanted now was the hot bath Sean had promised, followed by blissful sleep. Sophie, along with her personal security detail, Danny Nucci and Ron Miller, stepped into the elevator with her.

“That wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been,” Sophie said.

“Danny was lucky enough to get cornered by that woman.” Ron chuckled and pressed the buttons for their floors. “Left me to hold back all the squealing teenagers.”

Abby fought the urge to roll her eyes. The woman was gross. She was dressed like a cheap whore. And, she was there with her daughter, not at some nightclub. She wouldn’t leave Danny alone.

“You could’ve given me some help. She was disgusting.” He shook his head exaggeratedly.

“She was quite fond of you.” Abby laughed to mask her real feelings.

“Not one of you tried to intervene. I’m gonna need to shower for a week in order to get her perfume out of my nose. She reeked.”

“Yeah, you do smell pretty,” Abby goaded.

“I’ll remember this. Just wait,” Danny warned as the elevator door opened to Sophie’s floor.

“Night.” Sophie gave Abby a quick peck on the cheek before she stepped off the elevator.

“Night.” Abby waited inside the elevator with Danny. He held the door open while Ron walked Sophie to her room.

“So, what are your plans for the rest of the night? A late night rendezvous with the smelly cougar?” Abby teased.

“Aren’t you the funny one this evening. Well, baby doll, it’s two-thirty in the morning, so I’m thinking sleep. Why? Did you have something in mind?”

She got lost for a minute in his deep-brown eyes that sparkled with mischief. She’d always thought he was hot, but she was caught off guard by the desire to touch his cheek, to smooth her fingertips over his dimples. This visceral reaction to Danny kept happening more and more frequently, no matter how much she tried to suppress it.

“Um, you still with me, Abby?”

She blinked, and her cheeks flushed with heat. “Oh, you want me to answer you?” she laughed to cover up her embarrassment. She didn’t want him to realize she’d been daydreaming about how rough his five o’ clock shadow would feel against the flat of her tongue. “I told you how I feel about your stupid nicknames.” She tried to sound pissed, but didn’t pull it off.

Ron laughed as he entered the elevator and pressed the button for their floor. Danny glared at him for a moment then started laughing with him.

Abby changed the subject. Much safer that way. “What time are we heading out in the morning?”

“Oh-nine-hundred hours,” Danny replied.

“Okay, Drill Sergeant, I’ll be ready.” The elevator dinged, and the doors opened to the semi-private floor which held the suite she shared with Sean, along with another across the hall where Danny and Ron stayed.

“Well, Military Man, it’s been a pleasure. I’m gonna go pass the hell out. Have a good night. See ya, Ron.” She waved over her shoulder as she slid her keycard through the electronic lock. When the reader beeped and the green light came on, she gave the men one last smile before entering her suite.

She closed the door and removed the nude color platform pumps from her aching feet. Clearly, her shoes were made for showing, not walking. She made her way into the large sunken living room; the muted neon glow from the Vegas strip was the only light in the room.

“Sean?” Abby called on her way to the bedroom. She dropped her shoes next to the dresser.

Sean wasn’t there, even though he’d said he would be. Abby blew out a puff of air, annoyed with herself for believing him, yet again. She wasn’t lying when she said she’d reached her limit, but that didn’t matter when he knew that it wasn’t up to her anyway. Her mother would never let her leave him. She had plans, and it didn’t matter what Abby wanted. Abby turned the light on then dug into her bag for her phone. It wasn’t there. “Fuck,” she muttered. She picked up the hotel phone and dialed Sean’s number. It went to voicemail. She hung up. There was no point in leaving a message.

She dialed back to the operator and asked to be connected to Sophie’s room.

“Hey, sorry to bother you, but do you have my phone?”

“No, I don’t think so, but let me look. Hold on.”

Abby chewed her lip, thinking about Sean. Where the hell was he? Worse, who was he with? A hard knot formed in her stomach as she thought about what he might be doing.

“Hey,” Sophie said. “I don’t have it.”

“I must’ve left it in my dressing room.” Typical, considering the way her luck had been tonight. “Sean’s not here. You know what that means.” She sighed. “I’m gonna go find my phone.”

“Why do you even bother with him anymore? We’ve hashed this out before.”

“It’s late. Can we talk about this later? He’s not here and right now I can’t even think about what that means, but I know I need my phone.” She was sick of it all.

“You shouldn’t go alone.”

“It’ll take twenty minutes. Quick and easy.” Thankfully the arena was connected to the hotel.

“Okay, but ask one of the boys to go.”

“They’ve had a long night. I don’t want to bother them. I won’t be long, and besides, you’ll know where I am. When I find my phone, I’ll call you.”

“Abby! Tell them. I get that you’re upset, because Sean’s disappeared…again but don’t do something stupid.”

“Fine. Will you come with?”

“I’ll meet you at the elevator.”

“Perfect. Thanks.” Abby slipped on a pair of flats and unhooked the panic button from her purse and attached it to her bracelet. Danny insisted that she wear the damn thing. She insisted that it looked good as a charm she could wear hanging from wrist or attached to her purse. After all, security was important, but appearances could make or break her career. She didn’t want it to look like she had a tracking device on her.

Abby double-checked that her keycard was in her pocket before she let her door close behind her, then she jabbed the call button for the elevator. She was about to knock on the door to Danny and Ron’s suite, but a ding sounded behind her and announced the arrival of the elevator. “Damn.” She decided to call the guys when she got her phone and hurried into the elevator before the doors could slide shut without her.

Debra is a native New Yorker who made her escape to the suburbs. She often returns to her hometown to visit her favorite deli for a bagel with butter, because there’s no better bagel than a New York bagel. When not in search of bagels, Debra spends her time running Book Enthusiast Promotions, an online promotions company that helps indie authors spread the word about their books. She’s also the owner of The Book Enthusiast blog.

She started writing lyrics in her wall-to-wall NKOTB bedroom at the tender age of thirteen while dreaming of the day she’d become Mrs. Jordan Knight. That dream never came to fruition, but she has continued to write. Now she’s working on her first novel.
