2037 was a really bad year.

EXCERPT:

Wordlessly, Lexi grabbed her purse and darted for the exit. She needed to see it. She had to know for sure.

The midnight sky was pierced by jagged red veins. A thousand burgundy fingers tore through the stratosphere like lightning etched in the wrong color. Puffs of smoke dotted the horizon, mushroom clouds rising toward the ominous red ether. From the descriptions and images in Lexi’s VirtuAlarms, it appeared Santa Fe had gotten off easy. Other cities looked like they’d been struck by an atomic bomb.

The world was blazing. The sky was breaking apart in pieces.

AutoScan—Jorge Rodrigues, I didn’t see your texts ‘til just now. They’re grounding all planes immediately? Scary stuff. Wish I was there with you. Where’s your plane landing?

With a rapid-fire double blink, Lexi sent the message.

Jorge’s response flitted across Lexi’s cornea. His words felt frantic. Can’t get down. Capitol Hill is burning. Dense population, nowhere to land. 80 miles from Dulles Airport. I don’t think we’ll make it.

Lexi read the last sentence and crumbled. She fell to her knees on the hot New Mexico concrete, sirens blaring in the distance and meteors crashing to the ground with a fiery scarlet vengeance.

“No,” she begged the universe. “Please, no.” Her vision blurred. Lexi ached to rip her skin off her body, inch by inch, melting into a heap of exposed veins. It was so enticing. She wanted it so badly. It was what she deserved, truly.

She should’ve been on that airplane with Jorge. Self-reproval flitted through her mind on an endless loop. Should have, should have, should have, you worthless idiot.

She gasped for air.

AutoScan—Colin Brennan, dial right now, she instructed, calling her brother via electrical impulses connected to her cranium. Five beeps sounded in her ear, then the line went dead.

Tears rolled down Lexi’s cheeks as she mentally composed another note to her best friend at SkyLine. AutoScan—Jorge Rodrigues, don’t talk that way. You will land safely. Reagan International probably has space for diverted aircraft. You’ll be fine. I promise.

As she waited for Jorge’s reply, she dug her nails into her leg, reopening the wound on her thigh. She picked at it, forcing the gash to widen. It was the size of a dime, then a quarter. She kept pulling, peeling, exposing her insides. She wanted her entire soul to leak out.

“Don’t leave me, Jorge,” she whispered. “Don’t you dare leave me.”

Colin tried to leave all the time. Lexi couldn’t handle another loss. She needed Jorge. He was her partner in crime, her other half. He was the best thing about being a flight attendant.

Words appeared in front of Lexi’s eyeball. Her chest tightened.

I don’t think we— Jorge began.

“What?” Lexi murmured aloud. Her hands fell to her sides, limp. “What is it, J.R.?”

Lexi craned her neck toward the red-streaked sky. She shouted, pleaded, implored her buddy bidder to write back. She wanted to hear details about his safe landing, after the pilots found an open runway someplace in Maryland.

Arms clasped around Lexi’s waist, dragging her back into the restaurant. She kicked and screamed, fighting to stay outside. She wanted the sky to collapse on her and drag her into the deep black unknown. She didn’t deserve the safety of four solid walls and a roof. She didn’t deserve to be in a city that had received minimal damage from the celestial hellfire.

Lexi began to chuckle as she was forced back inside the restaurant. She could barely breathe from laughing so hard. Through narrowed eyelids, Lexi saw customers and staff staring at her in disbelief. She continued flailing her limbs. She laughed with all her might, a deep guttural guffaw that echoed through the bar.

When a VirtuAlarm informed Lexi that two planes in the Northeast had been struck down, she was convinced she’d dreamt the whole thing. The aircraft she was supposed to be on that night had not burst into flames. No way, no how. Jorge was not dead. Lexi would wake up soon, she knew. She would call him. They’d talk about her silly nightmare, her tendency to imagine the worst possible scenario, her bizarre fear of erupting into laughter during a moment of crisis.

Lexi would wake up and chat with Jorge for hours. And she would not swap out of their next scheduled airline trip.

MERCY
For years, I’ve served the men of Ember Glen. I’ve endured their depravity because it’s required. But when the most vicious man in our village decides to target me during a purge, I have to make a choice…

EXCERPT:

He woke up curled in a fetal position among the carcass of a dismembered deer.

It looked like someone had gone all Texas Chainsaw Massacre on the creature, not eating any of it, just slaughtering it for the sake of killing. The forest was dead silent around him, not a rustle of a breeze to stir the air around him, as if all the forest animals knew an apex predator was among them and had scattered. The scent of death and blood and terror lay heavy around him. Instead of rousing his hunger or even his wolf, who finally seemed sated, the smell only made him sick.

He lurched to his feet and stumbled a few yards before falling to his knees and vomiting in the bushes. Only bile came up. He rested on his side after that, sweating in the cool night air, shivering and wondering where the fuck he was.

How much time had he lost?

Damn it. He’d sworn to his Beta that he’d stay in human form, that he’d resist the call of the wolf, but the beast had been pulling him under again, more and more frequently, until sometimes, he wasn’t sure if he was a man anymore. The fear clenching his gut was real. The more he lost himself to the beast, the closer he came to losing himself entirely. If that happened, the pack would eliminate him for the safety of everyone around him. At least he had stuck to killing an animal this time. Next time, he might do worse and attack a human or one of his pack mates.

A scent tickled his nose, overlaying the smell of sickness and death. It was a mixture of maple, buttery rum, and caramel, but tainted with a sour smell of fear, sweat, and drugs. His wolf pushed to the surface, straining at the restraints he put on the beast, lured by the scent. He tried to throttle him back, but the rage that enveloped him every time his wolf took control gripped his mind.

He shifted—the painful breaking of bones and the reshaping of muscle and skin from his human form into wolf—until he stood in the clearing, a large ink-black wolf, blending with the night. His wolf allowed the man to remain aware, something that hadn’t happened in a long time, and he turned his attention to the north, where the scent pulled his attention, and the boundary of his territory.

No one should be out here. He’d banished himself to this goddess-forsaken part of his territory when he’d started losing control where he’d hoped to contain the madness until he could find control or a cure. However, now, his land was being invaded. He didn’t want to control the beast who hungered for the blood of those who dared foul the sweet scent. It reminded him of something important, something his wolf desperately wanted though he wasn’t sure why.

He immediately took off toward the sweet maple scent with long loping strides, covering the ground quickly. He was downwind of the intruders, so it was too late before they realized he was there. He slashed and tore his way through them, clawing and ripping at their flesh before they could fight back, not that they were a match for him. He was an Alpha, a supreme killing machine, an apex predator among predators, and these humans and shifters couldn’t hope to win against him.

Within moments, the carnage was over and all lay dead around him, except for a sack laying in the center, unmoving. The caramel, rum, and maple scents were stronger there, and he changed back to human, gasping at the transformation. Even for him, two quick changes in a short period sapped his energy, but something told him it was important that he be human for this.

Suddenly, the bag moved, and he stepped back, an involuntary snarl coming from his throat, the wolf still holding him in his grasp. He nudged the bag with his foot, and the wiggling continued, with the top of it changing shape, morphing as if something was trying to push out of it. A hand wedged its way out, then another, opening the drawstring at the top. All at once, the bag was pushed down around the naked shape of a woman.

She sat up, spat out a dirty rag, and blinked rapidly in the dim lighting of the forest. She took in the dead bodies and his naked form, and said, “Well, fuck. This can’t be good.”

Author Bio:

Sabrina Silvers began her writing career dreaming of elves, orcs, and hobbits in the fantasy section of her local library, looking in wardrobes for Narnia and Aslan, and hunting for gnomes in the forest. To her dismay, she never found any of them except between the pages of her books. So, she had to go out and create them for herself, leading to her lifelong love of reading and writing and dreaming about adventures, fantasy creatures and love in fantasy lands! She divides her time between writing sexy contemporary romances under a different pen name, reading, knitting and being owned by a very spoiled cocker spaniel who does not share her love of fantasy creatures.

Excerpt

I wanted to kill him. No, I wanted to hate fuck him, then kill him. Angel? I was no fucking angel. But Flynn’s sharp intake of breath had me pausing and I knew. I just knew.

Professorhole wasn’t talking to me.

Flynn zeroed in on my lips. He bit down on his, teeth scraping over the plump flesh. It was a shock to my system. Desire flooded me once again. But this time it was for Flynn.

The professor was talking to Flynn, telling him to kiss me.

A shiver ripped through me. I wanted it. I wanted him.

He was my best friend, the boy who needed as much of an escape from his shitty childhood as I’d needed from my shitty teenage years.

He’d grown up the odd kid out, the baby of a dirt-stained gaggle of kids who was terrified of the rats that called the squalor in their hoarder-dump of a house home. I was the girl who had everything and lost nearly all of it. The one who was so destroyed by grief that she did ever more daring things just to feel something. Whether it was letting men use me like a revolving door, or hacking into whatever top secret records I could get my hands on, I didn’t care.

But Flynn never judged me, never criticized me for the way I lived. He never called me names or treated me like I was an object like so many others did. His eyes on me felt good, but he’d never once taken advantage. In my darkest days I wouldn’t have hesitated to spread my legs for him, but he'd always been kind. Respectful. That meant more than anything to me.

He was gorgeous too, beautiful. The light to my dark, the soothing balm to my raging inferno.

I couldn’t live without him.

I loved him. I always would. He was my best friend.

I’d never crossed that line before and now I didn’t know whether I should.

But I needed it too. I rubbed my clit against the professor’s body trying to get off, despite the hatred thrumming through me. Logic told me I wasn’t quite right in the head for wanting it. For needing the professor’s cock like it was a life preserver and I was drowning in shark infested waters. I knew it was wrong. Even though it had been a long time since I’d craved dick like this, I knew what society would label me as. I just couldn’t muster up the fucks to give. Other people’s rules could take a flying leap off the nearest cliff for all I cared.

But I didn’t want to hurt Flynn. I let go of the professor, tapped the hand holding my leg, and he stepped back, moving out of my peripheral vision.

“Zee,” Flynn whispered. I saw it in his eyes. I finally understood the way he looked at me. It was love. It was adoration. It was home. We were each other’s safe harbours. But instead of my breakwaters holding steady, keeping the calm inside, a crack appeared in mine. My walls were crumbling, giving Flynn this part of me I’d never given him before.

I reached for him, lifting my hands to his face. Brushing my thumbs over his smooth cheeks, I finally saw the man he’d become standing before me. “Hi,” I whispered, revelling in the strength he exuded. He reminded me of a gymnast. Compact muscles, lean and firm everywhere. His warmth seeped into me, lighting up the darkest of corners of my cobweb filled, cracked heart. When he wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me closer, his other hand cupping my cheek gently, I sighed.

“You finally understand, don’t you?” he asked. When I nodded, he smiled one of those joyful light-up-the-room smiles that radiated outward from his very soul. “And you aren’t running?”

“I’ll never run from you, Flynn. I… I can’t—”

“Shh” he whispered, his lips hovering only a hair’s breadth away from mine as he nudged my nose with his. “Do you want me?”

“Hell, yes,” I huffed with a smile. “I really do.”

“Stay,” Flynn demanded, breaking the trance he’d lulled me into. I’d forgotten about the professor even being there, forgotten where we were standing and what we’d been doing only a moment earlier. I ground my teeth together, a sudden flare of anger sparking in me. But that rage immediately morphed into heat. It pooled in my belly, my juices wetting my thighs until they were slippery. “Lock the door,” Flynn growled like a man on a mission.

I turned to the professor then and shivered. He screamed sex. Dark, dirty, hard fucking. His eyes were like molten emeralds, intense and hypnotic. His hand flexed, white knuckling the doorknob, his jaw tensed as he ground his teeth together. I broke his stare, my eyes wandering down his body. He was big all over, but the bulge in his pants that he was gripping with his free hand, was one I wanted my mouth around. Or any other part of me. Whatever, I didn’t care as long as he made me come long and loud.

My clit pulsed. Fuck me, I was going to have sex with both Flynn and the professor in his office. I whimpered, needing them, wanting them.

“Your kitten needs you, angel,” Professor Reid rasped.

“So clear the table for me,” Flynn challenged, lifting his chin defiantly. I saw the quirk of the professor’s lips, a smirk like he’d seen the move before. He had. It was one I’d practically patented for use on him.

Flynn gripped my chin gently but surely, staring into my eyes as he spoke. “We’re gonna take her apart.” A gush of wetness soaked out of me again as my body practically rolled out the welcome mat and begged to be stuffed full.

The flick of the lock was loud in the quiet of the office. The only other noise was my laboured breathing. Desperation crawled over my skin, needing them. Wanting them.

Breaking Flynn’s fierce stare, I watched as Professor Reid stalked to the table like a predator, swiping the contents off in one fluid stroke of his arm. Why was the bastard so hot?

“I’m still waiting for you to kiss her, angel,” he challenged.

Flynn moaned, a deep gravelly sound in the back of his throat, and it turned my insides to a shivery mass of want. My nipples peaked and my insides clenched hard as I tunnelled my fingers into the baby-soft strands of Flynn’s golden locks and dragged his body closer to mine. He came willingly, running his hands down my back, over my butt and clasping them under my thighs. He lifted me effortlessly, positioning me on the table as he pressed his lips to mine.

Electricity.

Fire.

Calm waters.

Serenity and bliss.

I inhaled his scent, taking it into my lungs and holding it there. He was all my favourite things—the ocean, blue skies and a light breeze on a spring day. That perfect lie-naked-in-the-sun-and-let-warmth-infuse-your-bones kind of scent. I wanted him inside me forever. With me forever.

He pressed a kiss to my mouth again before he flicked his tongue against my lip. I opened for him, our mouths connecting for the first ever time. Our tongues touched, and he sipped from my lips, gently and reverently. I couldn’t help the moan that travelled through me like a ripple in a pond. Slow but purposeful, Flynn took me apart at the seams, flaying away every mark every man before him had left on me. He cherished me, worshipped me in his kiss.

His hands travelled the length of my body from hip to shoulder, raising gooseflesh in their wake. A third hand landed on my back, squeezing my nape, Professorhole’s lips nuzzling my hair.

“I can’t stay away,” he admitted against my temple as he pressed his erection into my thigh. “I don’t even want to.”

About the Author

By day Ann Grech lives in the corporate world and can be found sitting behind a desk typing away at reports and papers or lecturing to a room full of students. She graduated with a PhD in 2016 and is now an over-qualified nerd. Glasses, briefcase, high heels and a pencil skirt, she’s got the librarian look nailed too. If only they knew! She swears like a sailor, so that’s got to be a hint. The other one was “the look” from her tattoo artist when she told him that she wanted her kids initials “B” and “J” tattooed on her foot. It took a second to register that it might be a bad idea.

She’s never entirely fit in and loves escaping into a book—whether it’s reading or writing one. But she’s found her tribe now and loves her MM book world family. She dislikes cooking, but loves eating, can’t figure out technology, but is addicted to it, and her guilty pleasure is Byron Bay Cookies. Oh and shoes. And lingerie. And maybe handbags too. Well, if we’re being honest, we’d probably have to add her library too given the state of her credit card every month (what can she say, she’s a bookworm at heart)!

She also publishes her raunchier short stories under her pen name, Olive Hiscock.
