Excerpt

Prologue
Jesse Falcon

Every time I near her door, I struggle to go inside. I hate being in the hospital. The smell is a mixture of things, all inescapable. The most prevalent is the jumble of two emotions—happiness and sorrow. Some people laugh. Some people cry; it all depends on the day.

I force myself to stand outside her door for a few more minutes. Who would’ve thought that I’d be here? Who would’ve thought I’d be spending my afternoons in a hospital entertaining her while she fights for her life? Not me. And I’m sure as hell she didn’t expect to be here either.

No one should expect to be here because no one ever should.

Although my feet want to remain frozen, I take a deep breath and force myself to knock. I wait a few minutes, but no one answers. I press my ear to the door, hearing no noises coming from the other side. Maybe she’s sleeping. I should come back another time, I tell myself, but I know I’m just trying to find a reason not to go into that room. Instead, I do what anyone in my position would do; I fight my cowardice, my desire to run away.

I open the door and let myself in. I’m immediately greeted by an empty space. Even for a hospital, it looks too clinical. The bed is made, the machines have been put away, and the flowers that were here yesterday are gone. There’s no sign that someone was here. No sign that she had been here before.

Immediately, I get the feeling that something is wrong.

Zoe Evans
Cancer.
That is the word ringing in my ears.
I have cancer.
Cancer.
Me.
I have it.

The word continues to loop like a bad soundtrack in my mind. It’s on repeat, but I struggle to comprehend it. I hear my mother’s cry and turn in her direction just in time to see my father bringing his arms around her to keep her suddenly limp body from hitting the ground. Her reaction is what tells me I’ve heard the doctor right.

I think back at how I ended up here. One second, I was on the phone with my mother, telling her about this fever that wouldn’t go away. Even with the fever, I remember telling her how excited I was to finally get a break from school and spend my time with her and Dad. She kept insisting I get myself to the hospital, but I refused. I thought it was nothing…but it persisted. The fever didn’t go away, so I finally decided to listen to my mother.

A fever. That’s all I thought I had, but I was wrong.

I have Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Leukemia.
Cancer.
Me.
I have it.

The rest of the doctor’s words are lost on me as I feel as if I’m not really in my body anymore, I’m not in this room anymore. Suddenly, I’m lightheaded and my vision blurs.

“Are you okay, Zoe?” I think I hear someone say, but before I can answer, everything goes dark.

Excerpt

By the time the wine bottle is empty, my fingers are like prunes. Lifting my drunk self out of the tub is a precarious exercise, but one I've perfected quite well. Turning the radio off, I move to the linen cupboard. Sober me forgot to leave a towel out. Drunk me is amused to find that sober me also forgot to bring the clean towels up from the laundry room downstairs.
Oh man, I really am drunk.
“fuck it” I think out loud before I make my way to my room. This is the only perk of being alone here for a few days. There's no one to judge me if I decide to stay in pyjamas eating takeaway and drinking wine all weekend. There’s also no one to judge me or my not so youthful anymore body if I decide to stroll down stairs butt naked at three pm. It’s actually quite freeing. Since the girls, I’ve struggled with how I see myself, my body. Carrying two good sized babies to almost full term does terrible things to a women's body. No amount of gym and Pilates is ever going to fix the mess that is my stomach and thighs, much to my chagrin. And even more to Petes, obviously.
“I bet Amber’s thighs don’t jiggle” I mutter to myself as I pad down the stairs. In fact, I know they don’t. I saw enough of them in Pete’s office to know that she’s toned in the places that mattered to my husband. Ex-husband?
What the fuck ever.
Deciding that my wayward thoughts need to shut the fuck up, I detour to the fridge for more wine, completely forgetting that I still haven’t grabbed a robe or a towel to cover my ass up. Yanking the door open, the frigid air biting at my skin causes me to let out a startled yelp.
“holy shit, that’s cold” I mutter as I leaned in to get the wine that I'd stored right at the back away from the girls.
“I think that’s the point of a refrigerator, Sweetheart”
The deep gravelly voice sounding from the direction of the front door makes me jump out of my own skin, causing me to whack my head on the internal shelf. The clang of my teeth crashing together causing me to drop the wine from my hand and let go of the door that had until that moment, been hiding my naked body.
Not even the shatter of glass on the floor is loud enough to distract me from the complete and utter mortification I feel at being caught in all my drunk, naked glory by the most beautiful man I’ve ever seen.
Duke Nash.

Genre: Standalone Contemporary Romance
Cover Design: Wicked by Design
Release Date: January 29, 2019

Blurb

Welcome to Bad@ss Builds where the motorcycles are as sexy as the brothers building them.

Austin Burns:

I thought she wasn’t real the first time I saw her. To be fair I was a hungover mess when I woke up and looked into her gorgeous eyes. After getting the second worst news of my life—that my father would be paroled soon—I’d escaped to my buddy’s posh cabin near Lake Tahoe. Now the maid with the gorgeous eyes is snowed in with me, and I wonder if she might be a better distraction than the mountain of booze I’d planned on drinking. She’s curvy in all the right places, and the snow is falling faster.

Rachel Tannenbaum:

As a single mom, I don’t have time for men, especially irresponsible tattooed bad boys like my ex. But Austin is hot. And sexy. And stuck here in the cabin with me. I can’t say no to a fling with this bad boy, especially since Austin is so gorgeous and awkwardly sweet.

One night becomes two, and I don’t know if I can risk my heart—and my little boy’s—if Austin wants it to become more when we get through the snow and back to reality.

Excerpt

The fruity fragrance of the potted primrose tangled with the hints of sweat and fresh sex. The pillows and duvet coiled into a heap on the bed. However, the couple responsible for the disheveled state was no longer there. The glow from the moon shone through the large window, causing her ebony waves to shimmer, while he stroked his pale, slender fingers through her hair. He couldn’t recall another time in his life when he had felt as content as he did at that moment. His whole world was in this oversized chair. Her plump body curved in just the right places; her olive-toned, bare form lounged across his much paler lap. As she flipped through the leather-bound text, Rori leaned in, burying his nose in her hair and inhaling deeply. He savored the raw scent of the woman who had captured his formerly still heart. He couldn’t help but smile. Turning the page of the old leather-bound book, she read while resting her head against his chest. She was warmer than he was. She had far more life than he did. Perhaps his desire to possess her was something other than infatuation. Pressing his lips to the top of her head, he didn’t care the cause; he only wished to have her. How long had they sat there? How long had it been since he’d been inside her? How long had it been since she screamed his name? Having lost the concept of time long ago, he found it worse when with her. When she shifted her position even slightly, the stimulus stirred his hunger for her again. "I can't believe this stuff is so hidden." She broke through his thoughts. He smiled. There was much about the world he wanted to show Divina before reality set in. "Humans would not be able to handle such information." He stroked her arm with his fingertips. "Or perhaps I should say, they didn't, so we had to take it away and hide. The world would be a much more violent place if humans knew." With a furrowed brow, she turned her glacier-colored eyes that burned his soul, toward him. "You trust me?" "You're not fully human," he reminded her, while playfully booping her nose before giving her a soft kiss on the forehead. Her innocence drew him in like ants to sugar. He cherished her. These intimate moments with her were more valuable to him than any jewel or treasure. "So you keep saying," she grumbled, and once more shifted her hips, eliciting a groan from him. He wondered if she knew how those full hips affected him. Her smirk told him all he needed to know about that. "In all my years, I have yet to be wrong," he whispered in her ear. Rolling her eyes before turning them back to the book, she sighed. "I'm not sure I can handle the responsibility," she admitted. There: her vulnerability. Sure, she was mortal, therefore vulnerable. That wasn't the vulnerability Rori liked. No, the uninhibited honesty she offered him showed her trust in him. How she offered him her true self without concern for self-preservation. Naivety. He loved her for it and hated himself for what he had to do with it. Closing his own eyes, he took in a deep breath of her beautiful scent. Relishing the moment, he pushed the future from his mind. In the end, the right now, would be all he had. There was no need to rush it. Right now could end at any moment, and he’d only have the memory to comfort him. "You are so much stronger than you know, Divina. I will show you," he said. Those wide, innocent blue eyes pinned him once more. He hated the Ember Witches at that moment. He hated prophecies. He hated the world for what it was making him do. "You've shown me so much already," she said with wonder in her eyes. He forced a smile on his face. "There is so much more." Three Years Later Rori awoke from his daytime slumber with longing in his heart. Sometimes memories were the worst form of torture. When he let her go, he’d made peace with not having Divina. Forced to walk away from her, avoiding her for three years, had helped in achieving that peace. With the prophecy set in motion, he no longer had that luxury. They sent him back to her.
