Cover Reveal ~ The Pickup by Nikki Ash #Giveaway

Title: The Pickup
Series: Imperfect Love Book 1
Author: Nikki Ash
Genre: Sports Romance Standalone
Release Date: February 7, 2019 Cover Image: Sara Eirew Photography Cover Designer: Jersey Girl Designs

Somebody once said we don’t decide who we love. The world decides for us. But I disagree.
I believe love is a decision.
Who we love, how we love.
It’s in our control--in our hands.
I grew up having no clue about the true meaning of love. Money. Cars. Houses. Status. Fame. That’s what love means to the people around me.
It wasn’t until the woman I picked up in a bar came back into my life and showed me love can be so much more.
So, what’s the problem?
The woman I’m falling in love with believes in fairytales. She compares everything to a storybook and wants the happily-ever-after.
So while she’s stuck on recreating stories that have already been told, page by page, I’m showing her it’s time we write our own book.
Nobody ever said the journey of falling in love would be easy, just that it would be worth it.

They say your first kiss should be earned.

Mine was stolen by a devil in a masquerade mask under the black Chicago sky.

They say the vows you take on your wedding day are sacred.

Mine were broken before we left church.

They say your heart only beats for one man.

Mine split and bled for two rivals who fought for it until the bitter end.

I was promised to Angelo Bandini, the heir to one of the most powerful families in the Chicago Outfit.

Then taken by Senator Wolfe Keaton, who held my father’s sins over his head to force me into marriage.

They say that all great love stories have a happy ending.

I, Francesca Rossi, found myself erasing and rewriting mine until the very last chapter.

One kiss.

Two men.

Three lives.

Entwined together.

And somewhere between these two men, I had to find my forever.

“Are you sure you’re on my card?” I turned to the man with a polite yet distant smile. I was still disoriented from the exchange with Angelo when the stranger pulled me against his hard body and pressed a possessive hand lower than socially acceptable on my back, a second from groping my butt.

“Answer me,” I hissed.

“My bid on your card was the highest,” he replied dryly.

“The bids are undisclosed. You don’t know how much other people have paid,” I kept my lips pursed to keep myself from yelling.

“I know it’s nowhere near the realm of what this dance is worth.”

Un-freaking-believable.

We began to waltz around the room as other couples were not only spinning and mingling but also stealing envious glances at us. Naked, raw ogles that told me that whomever the blonde he’d come to the masquerade with was, she wasn’t his wife. And that I might have been all the rage in The Outfit, but the rude man was in high demand, too.

I was stiff and cold in his arms, but he didn’t seem to notice—or mind. He knew how to waltz better than most men, but he was technical, and lacked warmth and Angelo’s playfulness.

“Nemesis.” He took me by surprise, his rapacious gaze stripping me bare. “Distributing glee and dealing misery. Seems at odds with the submissive girl who entertained Bishop and his horsey wife at the table.”

I choked on my own saliva. Did he just call the governor’s wife horsey? And me submissive? I looked away, ignoring the addictive scent of his cologne, and the way his marble body felt against mine.

“Nemesis is my spirit animal. She was the one to lure Narcissus to a pool where he saw his own reflection and died of vanity. Pride is a terrible illness.” I flashed him a taunting smirk.

“Some of us could use catching it.” He bared his straight white teeth.

“Arrogance is a disease. Compassion is the cure. Most gods didn’t like Nemesis, but that’s because she had a backbone.”

“Do you?” He arched a dark eyebrow.

“Do I…?” I blinked, the courteous grin on my face crumpling. He was even ruder when we were alone.

“Have a backbone,” he provided. He stared at me so boldly and intimately, it felt like he breathed fire into my soul. I wanted to step out of his touch and jump into a pool full of ice.

“Of course, I do,” I responded, my spine stiffening. “What’s with the manners? Were you raised by wild coyotes?”

“Give me an example,” he said, ignoring my quip. I was beginning to draw away from him, but he jerked me back into his arms. The glitzy ballroom distorted into a backdrop, and even though I was starting to notice that the man behind the demi-mask was unusually beautiful, the ugliness of his behavior was the only thing that stood out.

I am a warrior and a lady…and a sane person who can deal with this horrid man.

“I really like Angelo Bandini.” I dropped my voice, slicing my gaze from his eyes and toward the table where Angelo’s family had been seated. My father was sitting a few seats away, staring at us coldly, surrounded by Made Men who chatted away.

“And see, in my family, we have a tradition dating back ten generations. Prior to her wedding, a Rossi bride is to open a wooden chest—carved and made by a witch who lived in my ancestors’ Italian village—and read three notes written to her by the last Rossi girl to marry. It’s kind of a good luck charm mixed with a talisman and a bit of fortunetelling. I stole the chest tonight and opened one of the notes, all so I could rush fate. It said that tonight I was going to be kissed by the love of my life, and well…” I drew my lower lip into my mouth and sucked it, peering under my eyelashes at Angelo’s empty seat. The man stared at me stoically, as though I was a foreign film he couldn’t understand. “I’m going to kiss him tonight.”

“That’s your backbone?”

“When I have an ambition, I go for it.”
A conceited frown crinkled his mask, as if to say I was a complete and utter moron. I looked him straight in the eye. My father taught me that the best way to deal with men like him was to confront, not run. Because, this man? He’d chase.

Excerpt

I believe in karma. Because Ian’s dead. Kate, too. But mostly because the news is delivered to me by the half-naked man in my bed.
“Are you okay?” Luke’s voice is measured. Ninety-nine percent hotshot cop. Which he is. One percent boyfriend. Which he wants to be but isn’t. Not officially anyway.
The faint furrow between his brows deepens. How cute. His first wrinkle. “Talk to me. Please.
“Is Madison alright?” I ask, my own voice high and breathy as a child’s. Ian’s daughter is quite possibly the only good thing he ever did. And I swear I’m not a heartless bitch. Though Ian had branded me one more than once. Back in the days of old when I’d called him a poor excuse for a husband and an even poorer excuse for a man.
“She’s fine. At least that’s what Coop said. He was first on the scene.” Luke gestures to his cell on the nightstand. The one that had buzzed us awake five minutes ago and exploded the world as I’d known it. “I’ll know more when I get there.”
Guilt, that slippery eel, writhes in my stomach, reminding me I’ve done something wrong. But I lop off its head. To hell with guilt. Whatever happened, Ian brought it on himself. He’d all but asked for it coming back here to my hometown. Invading my turf. With her. Besides, guilt is a useless emotion.
Ian had said it himself years ago, after I’d told him I didn’t want any special treatment in his class. The back-row girls will talk, I’d said. And he’d pushed me up against his desk and kissed me like a pathetic cliché. Dr. Culpepper always had his favorites. Easy come, easy go.
“Ava? Are you sure you’re okay?”
Luke strips off the covers, hurries into his jeans, and tucks his badge into his back pocket. I can’t look away from the lean muscle of him. Ian never had abs like that. Though to be fair, he’d been pushing forty when I met him.
“Ava?”
“Yes, I’m sure.”
“Because I don’t have to leave if—”
“You do. And I am. I promise.”
When Luke leans down to kiss me, his lips impossibly warm, I run my hand across his taut stomach and stifle a grin. Then, a grimace. Karma may be as slow moving as a freight train, but boy does she pack a wallop.

Author Bio

Forensic psychologist by day, novelist by night, Ellery Kane has been writing--professionally and creatively--for as long as she can remember. Just like many of her main characters, Ellery loves to ask why, which is the reason she became a psychologist in the first place. Real life really is stranger than fiction, and Ellery's writing is often inspired by her day job. Evaluating violent criminals and treating trauma victims, she has gained a unique perspective on the past and its indelible influence on the individual. And she's heard her fair share of real life thrillers. An avid short story writer as a teenager, Ellery recently began writing for enjoyment again, and she hasn't stopped since.

Ellery's debut novel, Legacy, has received several awards, including winning the Gold Medal in the Independent Publisher Book Awards, young adult, e-book category, and the Gold Medal in the Wishing Shelf Independent Book Awards, teenage category. In 2016, Ellery was selected as one of ten semifinalists in the MasterClass James Patterson Co-Author Competition.

“Max?”
Her voice was even more hoarse than his, and he leaned down, doing the only thing he could think of. He brushed his lips against her forehead. “Don’t speak. Let me get you some water for your throat.”
Her hands tightened on his shirt, and he froze.
“Or I can call my cousin in to help.”
She just blinked at him, and the bond between them flared. He couldn’t feel what she was feeling, their connection was far too new for that, and he didn’t know what kind of bond they would share anyway. But the fact that her eyes widened told him that she felt the difference, as well.
That was something they would have to work on. Somehow.
Walker walked in, his pleasant Healer face on, even though Max knew that his cousin was worried about them both. Hell, the whole Pack was worried with war on the mind, and Blade’s announcement about being Supreme Alpha—whatever that meant—far too new for comfort.
“You’re awake. That’s good. Let me get you some water to help your throat.” He tapped his ear as Cheyenne gave Max and then Walker a weird look. “Wolf hearing. I was already on my way in when Max offered to call for me. Why don’t you stay in bed, Max? You’re keeping her heart rate down.” He paused, looking at Cheyenne. “Unless you’d rather him leave the room. It’s all up to you, Cheyenne.”
She shook her head, and Max frowned, a sense of disappointment washing over him even though he tried to ignore the cause of it. Sure, they might be mated, but neither of them had made the choice to do so. So the idea that he was sad that his mate was rejecting him shouldn’t hurt. They weren’t really mates. Or, maybe they were, but they didn’t know each other enough for the pain to make sense.
And maybe Max needed time to breathe because he was thinking himself into circles.
“I…I’m fine.” Max let out a low growl at the sound of the pain in her voice, and she froze in his hold, her hand still resting on his chest.
“Sorry. Didn’t mean to startle you.”
She shook her head, then took a sip of the water Walker handed Max. She licked her lips, and Max did his best not to look at those lips. It was his wolf and the mating bond making him act this way, it couldn’t be anything else. Not when they were in this position because of something out of their control. She hadn’t had a choice in the matter and that meant there would be no acting on any urge.
Ever.
“It was the first time I felt a growl.”
He nodded, understanding. “Different for you then?”
She nodded. “You could say that.” She coughed, and he gave her more water, careful that she didn’t spill. “I need to tell you what happened…though I don’t know everything.”
Cheyenne looked over at Walker, then back at Max. “There’s something you need to know.”
Max had a feeling none of them were going to like what she had to say.

 Excerpt

Sweet brimstone, what was she doing here? Quution froze in his doorway at the sight of a purple demon reclining on his bed. He was one of the few demons who had an actual door. Another object he’d smuggled from the human realm, and it hadn’t taken nearly as much power as he’d thought. His gaze swept his chamber. Had she let others in? His need for privacy had him clutching the scrolls he’d borrowed from Demetrius’s mate, Calli, to his chest. The pile of books on the large stone in the corner of his cave was in place. His clothing hung from hooks on the walls, and the faux rock he stored his backup prosthetics in was undisturbed. But he couldn’t relax. A nude Xan lay on his bedding. He’d never experience a peaceful night of sleep again. As if he had in the first place. After the way he’d grown up, fitful sleeping was all he knew. “W-what are you doing here?” And how had she found his place? He’d manipulated energy signatures in a mile-wide radius around his chamber to misdirect and confuse would-be visitors. Very few people had been to his home, and each had been invited out of necessity. “Got a proposal for you, Quution.” Her purr caressed his body. His craving for contact, for another being’s touch, nearly drove him to his knees. He steeled himself. “I’m waiting.” She rose in one lithe move. He gulped and forced his gaze up so high he would’ve been staring at the ceiling if he hadn’t corrected and sought her dark eyes. So lovely. Mysterious. Determined. What was she up to? Would he be smart enough to keep her from whatever her goal was? She slinked toward him. Even with his gaze firmly on her face, he couldn’t miss the swing of her hips. He adjusted the scrolls just to distract himself and keep his blood from pooling in his groin. “Quution.” His name on her lips again. It was like she knew how his energy went haywire when she said it. “You’re the only one who can help.” She stopped right under his nose. Lavender laced with brimstone. Humans would wrinkle their noses, but he wanted to lean in, take huge breaths until he infused all his pores with her scent. He had to get her out of here. “What do you mean only I can help?” He managed to sound dubious and not horny. She trailed a finger around the top of one scroll, dangerously close to his skin. Her touch was close enough that his energy reached for her. A dark brow lifted as she watched him. “I need you, Quution.”
