Release Blitz ~ Wildfire (Midnight Sun Series #3) by Lynn Burke

Title: Wildfire
Series: Midnight Sun Series #3
Author: Lynn Burke
Genre: Contemporary Romance / Suspense / Action, Adventure / Mountain Man
Release Date: February 18, 2021

A child born of the wilderness, I don’t know many women. Never had one of my own.

But sassy little Annie Charran owned my heart long before I stole her first kiss. She paid a high price for my actions, and even though I want her for life, I’ll never fit into the one she has planned for herself.

Given the opportunity to beg forgiveness, I grab it—and end up facing death.

With instincts overriding my senses, I take again.

But this time, a wildfire flares, demolishing everything in its path. Survival means sacrifice, and for me, life trumps dreams.

I’ll force Annie to give up what she wants most, even if it means I lose her forever.

Kelly Kemmerly - “Exhilarating from start to finish!”
Jessica Ziola-Simpson- “amazing work and well worth the read!”
Andrea Fernandez - “An absolutely phenomenal journey to go….”

“Do you still love it out here like you did when you were a kid?” I asked, hating the silence between us as we hiked away from the river.

She walked ahead of me, and I studied her profile as she gazed from left to right and back again, ever watchful as a woman of the wilderness ought to be. “It’s quiet and peaceful, but I miss the noise sometimes.”

If she missed noise, she’d never want to live in the middle of nowhere full time. “What else do you miss?” I had to ask in order to keep my hopes clamped down shut that Annie could ever be what I wanted, what I needed in a woman.

“Running water.”

“That was kinda nice,” I agreed, remembering the shower I’d enjoyed while in town. “But at least you don’t need to worry about contaminates and filtering if you’re pulling water straight from the river flowing off pristine mountains.”

“I miss not needing sunlight to fill the battery packs,” she continued as though I hadn’t pointed out a positive of living off grid. “Electricity. Hot water on demand.”

She’d had them too long to give them up for a mere chickadee like myself. I scuffed at a rock on the trail we followed.

“Fresh eggs. Chicken and beef. Refrigerator to keep wine cold.” She sighed. “A freezer.”

“The cave in the hillside does a good job,” I tossed out, desperate to find something beyond the cons.

“It’s not the same.”

We hiked the rest of the way in silence since I didn’t need to hear any more negativity over the fact that what I enjoyed, what I had, would never be enough for her. As though I needed the reminder.

EXCERPT:

“Here.” Jasper grinned and pointed to this throat, teeth gleaming in the dark. “Although I would prefer if you didn’t actually hit my throat tonight. They might not be sharp, but you could still do some damage. But in all seriousness, most of your targets are going to be bigger than you. You’re going to want to aim for the easiest spots that do the most damage.” He pointed to several spots on his body. “Throat. Armpits. Stomach.”

I nodded, taking the details in. “What about the back?”

Jasper shook his head. “Too many bones. Stay away from it. You probably won’thave much time to aim.” He dug in his bag again, coming up with two Bokken of his own. Jasper swung them around in the air expertly a few times, looking like he was born fighting with them. “Okay, you ready?” My stomach tightened, but I could do this. I knew I could. These blades felt like an extension of my arms already.

We started out slow. “Stay close to your opponent.” Jasper was speaking so easily he could’ve been at a party, not in the middle of sparring. “Your size will be your advantage. If you stay close, they won’t have the range to do as much dam-age.” I nodded, not enough breath left in me to respond. Soon, the talking stopped, and the pace picked up by an unspoken agreement. I found my blades easy to use, but I felt clumsy and slow compared to Jasper. It didn’t take long before Jasper had one of his swords at my neck. We were both breathing heavily, caught up in the mo- ment. “Get out of your head Green. Don’t focus on my strength, think about your speed,” he told me, pushing me a few steps away to start again.

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. He was right. I wasn’t going to beat him with strength alone. My instincts were good, and I had to focus on that. I could do this. Turning off the logical part of my brain, I went on my in-stincts alone and dropped into a defensive stance.

Jasper mirrored my movements. “Now we’re talking.”

I focused on matching his blows with speed instead of strength. Jasper’s smile dropped, and the only sound in the dark night was the cracking of wooden blades asthey met each other. I found myself beginning to outpace Jasper’s moves, and I could see him concentrating as he tried to stay on top of things. There was nothing in my current world but me, these blades, and Jasper.

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:

She stood her ground as Cyodal bounded from one piece of garbage to the next. Crack. Snap. Thud. At least losing her innocence to a hunter who wasn’t her drawn mate translated to credits in her account. Maybe even as much as what keeping her virginity for as long as possible would give her.

But she’d promised her parents she’d do everything in her power to keep her innocence, and she wouldn’t go back on her word. Her parents had sacrificed so much to give her a good life, now she’d return the favor.

Cyodal landed on one end of the wire grate where she stood, his eyes glittering and his face flushed. He took a step toward her, and she automatically took a step back.

Pop.

With a gasp, she lifted her foot off the bubbling remains of grub beneath her remaining boot. The acid was already eating into the leather. Shit. Ignoring the steaming goo, she pushed the toe of her boot beneath the mass, and as Cyodal took another step toward her, she kicked the squished, oozing grub straight at the hunter.

He roared and swiped the burning splatters from his cheek, jaw, and throat…just as some kind of liquid bubbled up through his skin.

She gaped. Seriously?

His species appeared to have a self-defense mechanism against the wnagla grub, probably a sweat gland that released enough perspiration to rid itself of the acid. Not fair.

Cyodal glowered at her, then his focus dropped to her half-covered breasts in the lacy black bra. His eyes glinted as he did a slow, deliberate rub of his crotch, emphasizing the bulge that didn’t appear to have deflated one bit from his pain. “You’re going to regret that, bitch.”

She bit back a whimper as acid began burning into her flesh. Hopping on one foot, she tore off her remaining boot and sock. The hunter chuckled, clearly enjoying her pain.

She dredged up all her willpower to ignore the burn and sneer back, “You’ll have to catch me first, dickwad.”

She didn’t give him time to react. She spun, and in three strides she was free of the rotting trash. She put on a burst of speed, and in five more strides she was at the base of the stairs leading to the next level.

Too bad the shirt she’d wrapped around one foot chose that moment to unravel. She tripped and fell, jarring her shoulder and her knee against the steps. Her breath hitched then jerked out of her lungs as she was grabbed from behind and hauled against a hard chest.

Cyodal’s clawlike fingernails pushed into her shoulders to twist her around. Blood pounded like a drum in her ears when he gave a feral smile and said, “Going somewhere?”

“Not with you, she’s not.”

Cyodal’s grip tightened brutally as he spun around, putting her between him and the alien hunter he faced.

“Landry Marx,” Cyodal bit out.
