“Don’t make me regret my decision.”One corner of his lips curled up. Prying her gaze off him was way harder than it should’ve been. In jail, he’d had the dangerous-bad-boy feel so many women found appealing. She’d been the only female he’d had access to, and she’d been ridiculous to let his intensity worm its way under her skin. Yet outside of jail, it was doubly hard to protect her lonely heart when he looked and talked to her like she was the only girl on the planet.
He seemed like just a guy who’d had a crappy day and was fighting a headache. He’d lost his hat in the accident and his ink-black hair was inviting enough to run her hands through. Her palms tingled with the idea.
“You’re going to be stiff in the morning,” she blurted, looping around Caleb’s driveway. She parked by the back of his house with her car facing out.
“What?” He lifted his head and there was the scrutiny again, all on her. She opened the door to keep the enclosed cab from feeling too intimate, a problem she’d never had in her work vehicle.
“The whiplash. It’ll be like you went a few rounds inside a washing machine.”
He straightened from the vehicle, reminding her how tall he was. And how much she liked it. Jesse didn’t use his size to swagger and intimidate like Clinton.
She popped the trunk and together they wrestled his rectangular blue metal toolbox to the ground, where she left it. He didn’t insist it be moved anywhere else.
“Speaking from experience about the whiplash?” He followed her up the few steps to Caleb’s house, carrying a ratty black backpack over his shoulder. The three worn wooden steps creaked under his weight more than hers.
“Other people’s, not me personally.” She dug her personal key ring out of her pocket and opened the screen door. The hinges’ creaking echoed through the yard.
“I can handle feeling rough. A broken neck would’ve been harder to come back from.”
She paused pushing the door open, the remnants of her fear flaring up. When she’d driven up to the scene and seen his truck upside down… The dispatcher had relayed Murphy’s information, but she’d rolled up to too many accidents that were more severe than the caller had thought.
Then there’d been the utter relief and the “thank God” leaving her lips when Murphy had shifted enough to reveal Jesse planted on the edge of the road.
