As usual, I get too engrossed in my reading and am almost late for class. Sitting next to Hazel, I take out my books when Damon appears in front of our desk.
"You dropped your phone in the hallway," he says politely.
"No, I didn't." I look in bewilderement as he drops my smartphone in my hand. Damon smiles mischievously, walking over to his desk as Ms. Evans enters the class. Wouldn't I have noticed if my phone had fallen on the corridor during our altercation? Not really...I was too preoccupied with him to notice anything else. My skin heats up at the memory of his closeness. I swivel to ask Hazel something and find her staring at me with curious eyes.
"Do you have anything to share about your morning?"
"I read a book," I mumble.
Ms. Evan starts talking about the Bronte novel we had to read when I receive a text.
You should take better care of your things.
The sender appears only by number, not name, but I know who it is. Sure enough, one glance in Damon's direction confirms my suspicion. He's not looking at me or his phone, but lifts the corner of his lips. It dawns on me that I might not have dropped my phone at all. He must have taken it from my pocket.
And you shouldn't steal other people's things, I reply.
Hey, you were eavesdropping, so don't go all saint on me. You were the first offender.
I smile, overcome by a strange giddiness. I can't believe he stole my phone, or that he got my number, or that he's texting me right now. I'm grinning like an idiot. It's the first time a guy has written to me and not asked for my notes or something similar. Given our less than friendly interactions yesterday and this morning, this is a surprise. Sometimes it takes a healthy fight and a familiar pain to gain a friend.
"After the battle of stares yesterday follows the battle of messages?" Hazel murmurs, smiling. "Bad boy is showing quite an interest in you."
"No, he's not." Something light settles in my stomach.
"I heard that a junior tried very hard yesterday to make him ask for her number and failed. He must be very interested in yours if he got it on his own."
"This doesn't mean anything." The lightness grows, the giddy feeling bubbling up inside me.
"Maybe not." She leans in conspiratorially. "Maybe it does."
When Ms. Evan announces she'll question us about Wuthering Heights, I have the feeling Damon might take this opportunity to display the same unpleasantness as yesterday.
Be nice if Ms. Evans asks you something, I type quickly. Please.
He doesn't type back, and as Ms. Evan begins to ask questions, I brace myself. She deliberately avoids asking him anything though. Then she asks Beckett what his opinion is about the motives behind Heathcliff's behavior. He stares at her with a blank face, clueless.
It's Damon who answers. "Heathcliff felt out of place. He didn't belong to their class, and everyone else never let him forget it."
Ms. Evans' eyes widen, but all she says is "Do you think that justifies him?"
"No. That's no justification for being a dick to everyone," Damon says nonchalantly.
Ms. Evans flinches. "That language doesn't belong in the classroom, Damon." Her tone is firm. I'm proud of her. "I'll let you out of the questioning round because you're new, and I gave this assignment a week ago."
Damon's lip twitches, and I can tell he's about so say something obscene back. I sit up straighter, staring at him intently. He catches my eye and winks at me. I instantly flush, dropping my gaze to my hands.
"I had to read the book in my junior year," Damon replies. Ms. Evans nods, and then continues questioning Anna. I think about something the principal mentioned today... Damon scored mostly A’s at his old school. My assessment was spot on yesterday. Under the mask of carelessness hides a perfectionist. Someone who is clearly smart. As Ms. Evans instructs us to look up a certain passage in the book, I shift in my chair, holding my copy in my hands and pretending to flip through its pages. In reality, I am sneaking glances at Damon. Who was he before he came here and whom did he lose?
Thank you for not being rude, I text him under the desk. I receive an answer almost immediately.
Ouch. That sound like something you'd tell a dog. I'm not a poodle; don't try to train me.
I write back quickly. You're definitely not a poodle. More like a pitbull. I hear those are hard to train. Whatever they do, it's because they want to.
There is a pause in which I wait breathlessly, and then my smartphone vibrates. They also tend to attack their owners.
My fingers almost snap as I hurry to reply. I don't believe that. They just have a bad reputation. Don't believe everything you hear. It's all appearances.
Another short vibration. Ms. Evans looks at me, so I just chance a quick glance at my phone. So what should I make of your Linkin Park t-shirt?
Frowning, I text back as best as I can while pretending to pay attention to Ms. Evans. What's the harm in liking Kinky Fuck?
Damon's next message confuses me. Is that an invitation? I read what I wrote before, and shame washes over me.
Abandoning all pretense of paying attention to the teacher, I write It was autocorrect. I meant Linkin Park. OMG, I'm so sorry.
He doesn't write anything back, and when I look at him, he appears on the verge of bursting out laughing.

One of the hardest things I have ever had to do was bury my wife.

The second-hardest thing would be watching my twelve-year-old daughter fall to her knees as the preacher uttered his final words of comfort before her mother’s casket was slowly lowered into the grave. It finalized the fact that the woman we loved dearly was no longer within our reach. We would no longer be blessed by her smile or warmed by her words.

It was the most heart-wrenching sight, one that will forever be etched in my mind and which left a void in me I was positive would never be filled. It changed the man I thought I was and made me realize that loving someone with your entire heart didn’t ensure they would always be with you. There was no way to predict your fate.

Claire was my best friend; she had been since we were barely old enough to talk. I always knew I would one day marry her. I may have even told her so a few times while we were growing up. Even my brother, Noah, who is nearly a year younger than me, thought he would marry her. She was the perfect girl and had every man in Livingston, Montana, mesmerized by her looks and her personality. But she and I were meant to be.

I never thought I would lose her so suddenly. Now I was left struggling to find the strength I needed to push forward without her in my life. I couldn’t remember a day she wasn’t by my side, and now she was gone forever.

I sat in the chair looking at the deep, freshly dug grave before me, consumed by a feeling of emptiness. The air felt thick as it filtered into my lungs, making me feel like I was being suffocated. The anxiety of my loss was slowly overtaking me as I tried hard to fight the urge to break down and just give up.

Olivia’s sweet whisper pulled me from my daze, and I looked deep into her red, swollen eyes. I felt as if I had just been punched in the gut. There stood my little girl, looking broken and lost.

“I miss her already,” she said, her soft voice cracking.

Tears filled my eyes, and I could barely see her through them. God, her words weren’t strong enough for what I was feeling. I felt like I was trying survive without air to breathe.

I reached out and pulled Olivia in tightly, then cradled her protectively. “It’s just so unfair,” she cried into my shoulder, her body shaking against mine.

“I know baby, I know.” Life wasn’t fair.

Losing Claire was never a possibility in our minds. She had gone in for what should have been a simple procedure to remove her gallbladder. She should have been sent home that day to begin the healing process, well on her way to being the happy and active Claire we all knew. But within days she became deathly ill, and there was nothing I could do to help her. I stood by helplessly while the woman I loved with my all heart and soul suffered.

I can still remember our last real conversation. I had called home to check on her during lunch, and she sounded so tired and weak. She insisted, even after I questioned her for ten minutes, that she was fine and only had a headache.

“You’re buying me dinner tonight. No way am I cooking,” she said with a gentle laugh.

“I’ll cook you anything you want, babe. You just name it,” I assured her.

“Yeah, sure, Ryan. You can’t even make instant macaroni and cheese without burning it. We’ll just stick to going out for dinner, or better yet, we’ll just order in.”

She was right—I couldn’t cook for the life of me.

I couldn’t stop replaying that conversation over and over in my mind. I wish more than anything I would have said more. I wish I would have told her how much I loved her and how no one has ever given me the joy she has. I should have told her I adored her and how I treasure our every moment together.

Instead I told her to get some rest and that I might have to stop by the ranch and help out my brothers, so getting home late was a possibility.

I was unprepared for the phone call I received only four hours later.

Olivia had arrived home from school to find her mother curled up on the living room floor, lethargic with chills and a fever. She panicked and rushed to call 9-1-1.

The drive to the hospital is still a total blur; I was steered by pure adrenaline and fear. By the time I arrived in the emergency room, everything was spiraling out of my control. I found Olivia seated next to my parents and in-laws as the doctors told us what was happening to Claire.

Her bowel was nicked during surgery, and she was sent home without it being detected. Claire brushed off all the signs that something was wrong, believing the pain would soon go away. But when it had reached the point of agonizing, it was too late to do anything. Her organs were beginning to shut down.

As we sat in the waiting area, I felt as if my heart was breaking. I heard everyone talking around me, but my numb mind couldn’t take in a word. My entire world was behind those big double doors with the woman I chose to spend my life with. She was everything to me, and I couldn’t help her. I would have given anything to take her place.

The moment the doors swung open to reveal the ashen faces of the doctor and the small nurse at his side, my heart crumbled. My life shattered when he began to speak.

“I am so sorry, we did all we could.” The doctor hung his head, the loss clearly affecting him intensely. “I wish I could have saved her. I’m am truly, truly sorry for your loss.”

Claire was taken from us that day, and a huge part of me died with her. She was the biggest part of me, and I had no idea how I would go on without her.

Book Description:

Dwayne Gonzalez has always had a thing for the beautiful Brooke Mason, but she married another man, had his child, and started her life without him. Now, years and a divorce later, he’s still on the sidelines, yet in Brooke’s and her daughter, Hailey’s life, but not in the way he wants.

A drug investigation brings Dwayne on the front step of Brooke’s life. With his attention distracted, Hailey is kidnapped and engulfed in a human trafficking ring. Dwayne marches in and toes the line between the right side of the law, and in it, pursues his heart’s desire.

Worried about Hailey, exhausted to the bone, and slightly swaying, Brooke clung to Dwayne, took strength from this solid, very real protector. She would have to be dead not to notice his firm body beneath her fingertips, the hardness of his chest pressed to her breasts, and the wicked, clean scent drifting from his skin. While they were no longer hugging, but more her clinging to him, she didn’t want to turn away, couldn’t find the power to do so. How easy would it have been to end up with this man? She’d caught the looks he had given her before. But that had all been in the past, a separate life for them both.
She had become a mother, someone who dedicated her entire being to making sure her daughter was well-rounded, cared for, and knowingly loved. Not only that, but she wasn’t a young pup any longer, and from the few women she’d seen Dwayne with, his type seemed to have a list of traits all very similar: young, perky breasts, tight asses, single, and free of major responsibilities.
His hand tightened on her back and she held her breath, waiting to see if he would push her away.
Just a few more minutes, please.
She needed him, this close contact with another being. It had been so damn long.
Hailey refused to slow down to cuddle on the couch as she had once done as a young girl. Her daughter had her own life now, one currently held in peril, but Brooke had faith they would find her. They had to. Failure wasn’t an option.
Dwayne trailed his hand up her back and pressed a palm to her head, his other arm tightening around her waist. She went with the direction, pressed her face into his warm neck, and breathed. His skin emitted heat rivaling the summer’s sun. She grasped the back of his suit jacket, wishing she could be closer. He shifted their bodies, and her aggravation spun to something else. His lips brushed her temple, and moist air fanned across the side of her face. He hovered there. So close, all she had to do was turn her face and take his mouth. She knew he would let her, too.
So near to him, starved for human contact, she wanted to get lost for a while. She trailed her nose along his neck, took another deep breath, and pressed closer.
He grumbled something unintelligible, the sound coming from his chest more than his mouth. His hand at her waist laid flat on the small of her back and urged her closer still.
The situation was moving fast out of control. Tendrils unraveled, but she was helpless to stop it. This strong male held her as if she were a treasure. He had the power and ability to make her forget everything, to make all the stresses and danger go away.
His hand slipped beneath the back of her shirt and made direct contact with her skin. They both hissed and his breath pushed her hair from her face. His cruel yet sensual mouth continued to drift in a teasing caress across her temple. She turned her head, like molasses on a cold day, up and toward him. Her lips tingled in anticipation, waiting for his kiss. She brushed her mouth across the line of his jaw, a hairsbreadth from his skin.
His heart thudded against hers, a matching hammer between their bodies, telling her he was just as affected. The hand at the back of her head tightened. She trailed the caress over his cheek; his lips were right there, centimeters away.
The rest of their surroundings faded. She didn’t know if it was because of this man drawing her absolute attention, or because of her exhaustion.
She touched the side of her mouth to his and thought she’d be prepared for the rush of desire.
She was so wrong.

DDYA ecover

When I reach the track, I’m not surprised to see the football team. A typical warm up for most athletes is to run morning laps. I glance at Amy and she gives me the same knowing look. This will test the other girls on the dance team. Buffy and a friend primp on the sidelines. Their desire to impress the football players is not a good thing for us. Once they realize the connection Amy and I share with the two most sought after players, it will be hell for us. I have no doubt the cattiness will double the minute Troy and David pay attention to us. I can always hope the guys won’t speak to me, but I won’t hold my breath. David is always quick to claim me as his little sister. He wants to make sure guys know I am off limits, but we like each other as friends as well. Troy likes to give me a hard time, no matter what, but I know deep down, he considers me as genuine a friend as he does my brother. Before long, I sense a body beside me. When I look up, I’m not surprised to see David on Amy’s side and Troy on mine. I groan in defeat. “What? Not happy to see your favorite brother?” David asks. I roll my eyes. As we run, I give into my frustration. People watch the four of us and try to figure out what the deal is between us. “This is going to be just like back home,” I say as I fight to maintain my composure. “Two college football stars talking to two nobodies from the high school. That never goes over well.” Both guys give me knowing smirks. “You assholes are doing this on purpose, aren’t you?” They don’t say anything but look at each other with huge grins. That irritates the crap out of me so I pick up my pace, but Troy catches up with me. “Destiny, come on, calm down.” I don’t say anything at first. I don’t trust myself to speak. In the end, I sigh in defeat. Staying mad at David or Troy is impossible. It’s been like this our whole lives. I am screwed when it comes to them. They annoy and piss me off like no one else, but they also make me laugh like nobody’s business. Not to mention, they are always there for me when I need them, no matter how small the task. I realize too, at this moment, the message their actions send to anyone watching. Son of a bitch. They did this for more than one reason. They aren’t doing it for kicks. They want other guys to know I am off limits. I get why my brother wants to relay that message, but what is Troy’s motivation?

Book Blitz ~ Defiler by Cari Silverwood

Defiler by Cari Silverwood
(Preyfinders #3)
Publication date: July 28th 2015
Genres: Adult, Romance, Science Fiction

Our Earth is on the edge of destruction, our cities are pocked with missile craters, and beneath the surface the alien factory queen lurks.

Four women of power may be our saviors. The last is Talia. Gifted by earth magic with a mastery of edged weapons, she’s a katana-wielding, geek chick with a loathing of alpha men. Although mating enhances magic, she knows bonding with aliens must surely be wrong. Besides, her destined bond mate, Brask, is an Igrakk warrior of the caveman persuasion. One dominant male is bad enough. Dassenze, the alien man-god in the flesh, also desires her.

As they near their target, Talia’s man problems become the lesser of many evils, for the factory queen awaits them with her nerve chewers and her drills. The price for being avenging, kickass heroines could be a messy death.

Warning: Dominance and submission themes, dubious consent, hot aliens, and violence. Mild horror too if you’re squeamish.

The rhythm of the fight sang to her muscles and her mind. Brask went down to her blade, once, twice. They commenced again. The clunk and clang echoed in the room. Outside was pure darkness due to the window reflecting back the faint light Dassenze possessed. She parried and leapt backward, ready to return.
Stop!” Dassenze cried. “Let’s try this instead. Catch.”
Brask caught the flung object and sent his sword skidding along the table toward Dassenze. The object was small and pistol shaped. He held it up for her to see. “This simulates a handgun, Talia.”
Yes. I can tell if it hits you. It emits intermittent bursts of green light. I want to see if you can avoid being shot before reaching Brask. It’s dark. You’re tired. I can see you’re slowing down.”
Okay.” He didn’t miss much. She was tiring but so was Brask. She let her gaze calibrate the hard curves of his arms and the sheen of sweat on his chest and abdomen. These Igrakk aliens didn’t differ much at all from humans.
Like what you see?” With his thumb, Brask flicked something on the pistol. A green dot blinked on the floor in front of him.
I was simply comparing your anatomy to that of humans.”
And? What did you decide?”
The angle of his eyebrow and timbre of his voice fascinated her. Anatomy sounded clinical and her reaction was definitely not that. Something about having to look up at him, even from across the room, triggered an oh yum response. Next she’d be asking for his autograph.
She untangled her thoughts and searched for a witty reply. It didn’t arrive in time and for once honesty came first.
That you look very similar to a man.” She cleared her throat. “In your musculature. I’ve studied anatomy before getting my forensic pathology degree.”
Does that surprise you?”
Dassenze chipped in. “Throughout the universe, all intelligent life, excluding our enemies the Bak-lal, are mammals and compatible enough to mate and produce viable offspring.”
His words died away. The room was quiet. She was alone with them and they all knew what the other was thinking. Reproduction. Sex. Only her thoughts had gone precisely, unerringly, to the dirtiest possible arrangement with the two of them fucking her at once.
Abort that thought. Shit, damn, and crap. Stop thinking dirty.
The heat of a blush arrived. Then she wondered if those specifications included the Ascend who were supposed to be gods. She wasn’t going to ask.
In case you’re wondering, we Ascend don’t quite fit into that system.”
Could he mind read?
We can mate but not have offspring. There have been no new Ascend for several hundred years.
That was sad. Her eyes fixed on Dassenze. “How old are you?” Could a god have an age?
I’m very old.” His smile was barely there. “Now we’ve settled that. Begin. Get from where you are to Dassenze without being hit. Begin when this pen hits the floor.” He held his closed fist at his knee’s height.
The pen fell, tumbling.
Her flight was a rapid parabola curving to wall and back in, with a somersault and a spin to confuse his aim. The force when she hit him surprised even her and he thunked backward with her on top of him and the sword point diving toward his neck with her full weight behind it.
At the last microsecond, Brask batted it away. The sword flew sideways and stuck into the upholstery of a chair, yards away to the side.
A second later, it was back in her hand. Gaping, still straddling Brask’s stomach, she stared at the blade. How?
Then he hauled her down and kissed her.
The impact went through her like a flight of slow motion doves. Bliss. Everything shut down except an awareness of him beneath her and his lips on hers. His hand was at the back of her head and he threaded his fingers through her hair, gathering more in his fist to pull her even closer. To keep her still.
But she wasn’t going anywhere.
The kiss lasted forever, or it seemed so. While they kissed she lived only that moment, the press on her skin, the heat, the parting to allow his tongue inside her. When his lips left hers she was struck by the loss. She kept her eyes shut, reliving what had happened even though his breathing was still so close, inches away, warming her face.
And as he breathed, she rose and fell. Her thighs were spread. She was vulnerable, despite her position above.
She opened her eyes.
He looked up at her, smiling, with his fingers still tight in her hair, pulling on her scalp.
Any minute, he would fling her down and roll her over, pull down her tights and fuck her.
Her resistance had vanished. He could rip a hole in her tights and do her sitting here. She drew her lower lip between her teeth, on the edge of leaning down and whispering it to his ear.

Cari Silverwood is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling writer of kinky darkness or sometimes of dark kinkiness, depending on her moods and the amount of time she's spent staring into the night. She has an ornery nature as well as a lethal curiosity that makes her want to upend plots and see what falls out when you shake them.

When others are writing bad men doing bad things you may find her writing good men who accidentally on purpose fall into the abyss and come out with their morals twisted in knots.

This might be because she comes from the land down under, Australia, or it could be her excessive consumption of wine.

Freaking out readers is her first love and her second love is freaking out the people living in her books. Her favorite hobby is convincing people she has a basement...though she really doesn't. Promise. If it existed it would be a terrifying place where you would find all the dangerous things that you never knew you craved.

Own me Until Forever, Book 5 in the Pierced Hearts series, will be out late 2014
