My body always reacted at the sight of her. As did my heart, my pulse, shit, even my nerve endings seemed to vibrate anytime she was near.
Pulling my gaze from her, I crossed to the bar and took one of the two stools at the end that were always reserved for Mateo and myself. Being the Alpha and Bravo of our pack came with some perks…
“Hey, Max, what can I get you?” Natasha, Gillian’s younger sister, asked as she walked down the bar toward me. She was just as striking as her sister, but while Gillian was like walking sex, Natasha had always reminded me of a pixie. She wore her black hair cropped short, and rather than her sister’s blue eyes, Natasha had the coolest grey eyes I’d ever seen.
“Hey, Tash, how goes it?” I asked with a smile. She’d always been like a little sister to me.
“Can’t complain,” she replied, returning my smile with one of her own.
“I’ll have a Stella and a couple of menus. Mateo’s on his way.”
With a sharp nod, Natasha pulled two menus from behind the bar, then went to go pull my beer.
The door opened behind me, and I turned slightly to see Mateo walk in. I watched as Gillian caught his eye. He gave her a small grin as she sauntered toward him, laughing as his arms came down to lift her and those red lips locked on my best friends’ mouth.
I turned back quickly as Natasha set the beer down in front of me, but it was too late, the picture of them kissing was burned in my brain, and a painful bolt was running up my veins straight for my heart.
Gillian was, and always had been, promised to Mateo.

My cell pings with an incoming text as I approach the garage elevator, so I’m not exactly paying attention when I hear the elevator arrive and sense someone step out. I think I walk around the person, but my shoulder bumps hers. The delicate feel of her has me jerking my head up. “Sorry,” we say at the same time. She’s holding a box piled high with envelopes that partially block her face. I don’t know if it’s from our slight collision or a natural misstep, but the box wobbles in her hands. She sucks in a breath. I slip my arm under the box to help keep it from tipping over, but that seems to make it worse, because the next thing I know, the envelopes are spilling out onto the ground. “Son of a biscuit!” she says, unable to stop the box from crashing down but keeping herself on both feet. I burst out laughing. Hear me out. The “son of a biscuit” is damn adorable. I’ve never heard anyone actually use it before. But better still, the beautiful creature spewing such foul language is none other than the girl who dumped chicken wings on me. Teague. “I’m glad you find this so—” She stalls, finally meeting my eyes. Recognition crosses her face as she scrunches up her cute little nose in annoyance. “Amusing?” I finish for her. She opens her mouth to speak, but nothing comes out. The two of us running into each other again is pretty unbelievable. She huffs out a breath that’s a mixture of contempt and surprise. “I’m just as surprised as you, baby.” This time the sound she makes from the back of her throat is pure disgust. She drops to all fours to gather the envelopes back into the box. I bend down to help, reaching for envelopes while never taking my eyes off her. She’s pissed about more than the dropped cargo. “Bad day?” I say. She glares at me. “I’m sorry about bumping you. I was looking down at my phone and thought I had plenty of room.” Picture a hot girl with blue eyes so kind she couldn’t look daggers no matter how hard she tried. That’s what I’m privileged enough to be staring at now. The corners of my mouth pull up involuntarily. Her mouth, while set in a tight line, is sexy as fuck, those generous lips of hers distracting. “Seriously, Teague, I’m sorry.” Her expression goes from hard to soft instantly. She sits back on her haunches, puts her hands on her thighs. “You remember my name?”

I didn’t take the elevator down. The stairs were more private. That asshole had pointed a goddamn gun at me. He’d cocked it. And still my wolf was howling, crying out for her mate. I wanted to scream. The farther I got from him, the worse my heart ached.

He didn’t yell. He didn’t need to for my keen ears to hear him. Without moving a muscle, I asked, “Why? Give me one good reason.”


He put his hands up and slowly knelt to my level. “I don’t have one.”


I glared at him through the glass. “You’ll have to do better than that.”


He clenched his teeth but didn’t break eye contact. “I want…damn it.” He looked toward the back of the car.


I pressed the button, lowering my window, his scent intoxicating me. “You pulled your gun on me.”


His gaze snapped to my face. “And you didn’t defend yourself.”


“If you wanted me dead, you wouldn’t make a bloody mess in a hotel room, and besides, you didn’t have a silencer on it.” I shook my head slowly. “You’re too good to be sloppy.”


“How do you…”


I rolled my eyes. “How do I what?”


“Understand me.” He searched my face—for what, I had no clue. His voice was barely a whisper. “I was trying to protect you.”


“By aiming a gun at me?” I clucked my tongue. “That’s not usually how it works.”


He struggled to bite back a smile, and butterflies fluttered in my stomach. When he wasn’t a deadly asshole, he was way too handsome. He lifted his head, and his dark hair fell into his face. The smile was gone. Hunger burned in his eyes.


“My father ordered a hit on the last woman I cared about, simply to remind me he had the power.”


My heart thumped in my chest. “What does that have to do with pointing a loaded gun at me?”


“I was too weak to tell you to leave, so I let the gun do it for me. You’re in danger if you keep digging into Nero. I was trying to keep you safe.”


A laugh escaped my lips before I could stop it. “You’re obviously much better at killing than protecting.”


He nodded slowly. “True.”


“None of this explains why you’re out here shirtless asking me not to drive away.”


“Because…” He shook his head, staring at the pavement. “It doesn’t make sense.” He straightened up and took a step back from my car.


Damn, even in the dim lighting his muscled torso distracted me, the shadows accentuating every curve and angle.


“Until you stabbed me, I was excellent at”—he held up his right hand, extending a finger for each point—“lying, determining a course of action, and distancing myself from the job at hand.”


“And now?” I raised a brow.


“Now…” He groaned, cursing under his breath. His gaze met mine. “I’m confused and indecisive. I fucking hate it, and it could get us both killed.”


“I’m not sure what you want from me, but I’m not going to apologize.”


“An apology isn’t what I want.” He ground his teeth, his voice a hoarse whisper. “I’ve shielded you from my father for years, but now…I want you, Isabelle. And that could cost you your life. I came to say I lied to my father today, not to you. I couldn’t let you drive away without knowing. You were never a pawn. Not to me.”
